Munich Spatzen Win First Bavarian Flag Football Cup
Strong Start to the Bavarian Cup’s Debut
The AFVBY’s first official Bavarian Cup brought a total of 16 teams to Ingolstadt on Saturday. The tournament was played in a single-elimination format across four fields—with a total of 28 games from the first round through the placement games.
The Munich Spatzen entered the tournament with two teams. In addition to the first team, Munich Spatzen III also competed in the tournament. This once again underscored the club’s deep roster in Bavarian flag football.
The day got off to an impressive start for the first team: In the round of 16, the Spatzen defeated the Schloßberg Kings 53–0.
Munich Spatzen Dominate in the Quarterfinals as Well
The German champions left little to chance in the next round as well. Munich won decisively against the Neu-Ulm Spartans, 46–0, and advanced confidently to the semifinals.
Awaiting them there were the Erlangen Sharks. The game was much closer, but the Munich Spatzen maintained control and prevailed 34–20.
This sealed the deal: The first Bavarian Flag Football Cup would be decided in the final between the Munich Spatzen and the Augsburg Lions.
Offensive Fireworks in the Final Against Augsburg
The final turned out to be the most offensively explosive game of the day. Both teams engaged in an open back-and-forth battle, in which the Munich Spatzen once again proved their quality in the end.
Munich defeated Augsburg 53–42, securing the first Bavarian Cup in history.
For the Spatzen, this is yet another title in what has already been a successful year. Just last July, the team was crowned German flag football champions at the 2026 Finals in Hanover.
Munich Spatzen III Also Had a Strong Tournament
It wasn’t just the first team that turned heads in Ingolstadt. Munich Spatzen III also had a strong tournament. After a decisive 48–7 victory over the Augsburg Centurions, the team fell to the Augsburg Lions in the quarterfinals. More close and intense games followed in the placement matches.
To cap things off, Munich Spatzen III defeated the Neu-Ulm Spartans 41–30, securing seventh place. The fact that two teams from Munich were represented at the inaugural tournament and both performed competitively demonstrates the depth and growth of the organization.
Munich Remains a Stronghold of Flag Football
The tournament victory in Ingolstadt is in line with the strong growth of flag football in Munich. The Munich Spatzen have been among the most successful organizations in German flag football for years and are consistently continuing their success story in 2026.
By winning the German Men’s Championship and now the first Bavarian Cup, the Spatzen have brought two titles back to Munich within just a few months.
Especially in a city where American football is becoming increasingly visible thanks to the NFL, new flag football programs, and the upcoming NFL Munich Game 2026, the Munich Spatzen are sending a strong message at the club level as well.
Flag football continues to grow—even in Bavaria
The first Bavarian Cup also demonstrated just how widespread the sport has become. Teams from Munich, Augsburg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Neu-Ulm, Würzburg, Erlangen, and other cities faced off in Ingolstadt.
For Bavarian flag football, this debut was more than just a new tournament format. It was also further proof that the sport continues to grow in Bavaria and that more and more clubs are establishing performance-oriented structures.
However, the first entry on the list of champions goes to Munich: The Munich Spatzen are the 2026 Bavarian Cup champions.
