Double Victory for Munich: Erasmus-Grasser-Gymnasium Wins Two NFL Flag Championships
Erasmus-Grasser-Gymnasium Claims the National Double
Two age groups, two titles: For the Erasmus-Grasser-Gymnasium from Munich, the 2026 NFL Flag National Championships went almost perfectly.
On September 22 and 23, the ten best school teams in Germany in the U12 and U14 age groups faced off in Düsseldorf. After two intense days of competition, the EGG teams came out on top in both tournaments.
With this victory, the Munich school secured the national double in flag football.
U12 Wins Overtime Thriller 8–7
The U12 final was particularly dramatic.
The match against the Rellingerstraße School from Hamburg was a close contest that wasn’t decided until overtime. In the end, the Erasmus-Grasser-Gymnasium prevailed 8–7 and celebrated its first title of the tournament.
For the young players from Munich, it was the highlight of a tournament in which they were able to prevail against Germany’s strongest school teams.
The U14 Team Also Claims the Championship
Munich’s second victory followed shortly thereafter.
In the U14 final, the EGG faced off against the Josef-Albers-Gymnasium from Bottrop. This time, the outcome was more decisive: The Munich team prevailed 22–10, thus completing the one-two finish.
As a result, both national school championship titles from the 2026 NFL Flag National Championships went to the Bavarian capital.
Munich Teams to Travel to the U.S. in 2027
Winning the title brings an additional special reward for both EGG teams.
Both the U12 and U14 teams have qualified for the 2027 NFL Flag Championships in the U.S. There, the Munich students will represent Germany and compete against international youth teams.
For Munich’s young flag football players, this means the next big stage—and at the same time, the opportunity to compete against teams from different countries.
Flag Football Is Growing in German Schools
The success of the Erasmus-Grasser Gymnasium exemplifies the growth of flag football in Germany.
According to the NFL, more than 110,000 children and teenagers nationwide have participated since the NFL Flag Program launched in 2022. The program is designed to give schools easy access to this low-contact version of American football and is supported in Germany by DKB.
The sport is receiving additional attention thanks to its Olympic debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
NFL Continues to Focus on Flag Football and Youth Development
The NFL is further expanding its flag football activities internationally. The program is now active in 15 markets outside the U.S.
In Germany, too, the sport is set to become more firmly established in schools. Starting October 16, 2026, NFL flag football workshops for teachers will be held in several German cities. These workshops will cover both theoretical fundamentals and practical content designed to make it easier to incorporate flag football into the school day.
Munich Remains a Key Hub for Flag Football
For Munich, the double victory by the Erasmus-Grasser-Gymnasium marks another success in a strong year for flag football.
From the Munich Spatzen to the German national teams and the youth programs, the sport is growing in Munich on multiple levels. At the same time, the NFL continues to raise the profile of American football in the city through its programs and the NFL Munich Game 2026.
Now there’s another success to add to the list: two German school flag football championship titles—both from Munich.
And for the young champions of the Erasmus-Grasser-Gymnasium, the journey is far from over: the international stage in the U.S. awaits in 2027.
